2010 sees live music performance sales slump

Last year was the first time in a decade that live music performance sales figures slumped.

Last year marked an "unusual first" in the music industry as it was the first time in a decade that revenues generated by live music slumped, according to a new report.

The Performing Rights Society (PRS) found that music fans were not spending as much money on live performances as they have done in the past.

Its report, Adding UP the UK Industry, revealed that concert-goers spent 12 per cent less on face value tickets last year than they did in 2009.

Invariably, the authors were aware that many would jump to a "knee-jerk" reaction that the live music "bubble had burst" but urged calm.

They suggested that this wasn't necessarily a lessening in the appetite for live performances, but could, in some instances, be accounted for by the lack of big names being on tour in 2010.

The PRS said: "In 2010, a number of stadium- and arena-filling bands were not on tour – Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Take That – and many of those that did tour opted to play smaller venues in order to limit their risk – Kings of Leon and Rod Stewart played arenas rather than stadiums.

"This risk-averse behaviour is rational in the current economic climate."

Robbie Williams has promised Take That fans that he is still part of Take That and will still tour with the band.

He was speaking after the group finished their massive tour last week.
