4-track recordings 'should be enough for good songs'

White Stripes guitarist Jack White has reiterated his love of basic and traditional recording methods.

Many of the White Stripes’ records, such as Hotel Yorba and Seven Nation Army, are notable for their extremely raw and sparse sound and instrumentation.

Commenting on this trait, White said he does not necessarily like embellishments to songs such as Pro Tools.

Indeed, he said the song should be able to stand up on its own merits without being over-produced.

“If the songs aren’t pure to begin with and they can’t make it by being recorded on a four-track, then they shouldn’t be there in the first place,” he commented.

Speaking to Music Connection magazine, the guitarist added that he is planning to start work on a solo album before the end of the year.

However, he did not offer substantial details about the upcoming disc, such as song titles and which musicians he plans to work with.
