Another music-themed radio station, Radio 2, also saw its audience rise: whereas the previous year's opening quarter saw this at 14.54 million a week, it was 14.56 million in the most recent quarter covered: the opening months of this year (which is also the time frame the 6 Music data represents).
Speaking about 6 Music, the BBC's Tim Davie has commented: "After winning a Sony award for best station, these figures cap an excellent week for Radio 6 Music and represent another milestone in the growth of digital-only radio services."
The station has been broadcasting for just over ten years.
