A flute for you and a flute for me

Youngsters make flutes for less fortunate peers in Haiti.
Flute for you and a flute for me
Youngsters in California are getting into the Christmas charity spirit by making flutes for other young people in Haiti.

School children at the Open Classroom Leadership Magnet School in Thousand Oaks were taught how to build the musical instruments by Flutes Across the World, reported Ventura County Star.

John Zeretzke, founder of the multi-faceted, educational and humanitarian music program, explained that the idea was for youngsters to appreciate there are others less fortunate than them.

The children get to make one flute for themselves and another for a youngster in Haiti.

"It's a powerful program, and what I tell the kids is about giving — more than a flute. To most of these kids in the world, it's about giving hope from an American child," Mr Zeretzke told the newspaper.

"It represents somebody else in the world caring about them. It teaches these kids to be compassionate and giving of themselves. I tell the kids stories about kids in places where there is no running water, and that really makes an impression."

In other related news, Kilwinning Flute band celebrated its 60th anniversary.

They celebrated this historic milestone by purchasing a £4,000 flute.
