The soaring guitar riffs of AC/DC have the power to calm great white sharks, according to new research.

Eyre Peninsula, a south Australian charter boat operator, found that the hard rock music of AC/DC actually made the sharks "less aggressive", reported ABC News.

The band's signature song You Shook Me All Night Long was particularly effective in calming the ferocious marine mammal.

Matt Waller, from Eyre Peninsula, said that AC/DC was something that "really hit the mark".

He told the news station: "Their behaviour was more investigative, more inquisitive and a lot less aggressive - they actually came past in a couple of occasions when we had the speaker in the water and rubbed their face along the speaker which was really bizarre."

Sharks don't actually "listen" to music because they don't have ears. Instead they pick up on the frequency and vibration of sounds.

Researchers are now trying to establish what fundamental components of a song appeal to sharks.

AC/DC formed in 1973 and, in their own words, have described themselves as "like electricity itself", providing the world with an "essential source of power and energy".

They have sold nearly 70 million albums in the US alone.
