AIM launches campaign to save EMI
AIM, a trade body that provides a collective voice for the UK's independent music industry, has stated that it is to do everything in its power to prevent the break-up and sale of one of the most popular record companies.
It is in response to the announcement made by EMI that it has agreed a deal with Universal Music for the sale of its recorded music division and the sale of its publishing section to Sony Music.
Martin Mills, AMI co-founder, said: "This looks like breathtaking arrogance. It's hard to imagine this acquisition being approved, given Universal's existing dominance in an over-concentrated market. Even greater dominance would be bad news for almost everyone involved in the art and business of music."
Music Week reported that AMI had sent MPs a letter urging them make a case for protecting EMI.
"The increasing concentration of the music market in the hands of a decreasing number of gigantic multinationals has undoubtedly damaged competition," the letter reads.
"The proposed sale of EMI threatens further damage so great that it must be reviewed and resisted by the UK coalition government with the full support of the opposition."
