Album sales down in 2011
Data from the British Recorded Music Industry revealed to the Guardian highlighted that album sales fell by 5.6 per cent to 113.2 million, compared to a peak of 163.4 million back in 2004.
Digital album sales rose over the year by 26.6 per cent to 26.6 million while physical album sales dropped 12.6 per cent to 86.2 million.
Chief executive of the BPI, Geoff Taylor, said: "British music fans understand that the album remains the richest way to connect with an artist's work… Digital developments grab the headlines, but the CD remains hugely popular with consumers, accounting for three-quarters of album sales."
He added: "Physical ownership is important to many fans and the CD will be a key element of the market for years to come."
The biggest selling albums of the year included Adele's 21 which sold 3.8 million copies and the songstress's debut 19 which shifted 1.9 million copies.
Bruno Mars' Doo Wops and Hooligans, Rihanna's Loud and Lady Gaga's Born This Way completed the top five, while Jessie J, Michael Buble and Coldplay all featured in the top ten.
