Speaking to NME, she revealed that her method involved putting his records on in her bedroom and strumming along with them.
Calvi said she also takes inspiration from her favourite female artists.
"I love singers like Edith Piaf and Nina Simone, who have so much emotion in their voices," the musician stated.
"It's quite out of fashion now, but I really like it."
Calvi is preparing to headline the Emerge NME Radar tour, which also features Grouplove and Big Deal.
The run of gigs starts off in Portsmouth on May 1st, moving on cities including Bristol, Nottingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Liverpool and Birmingham.
It comes to a close in London on March 17th at the Koko venue.
She is also set to support Arctic Monkeys at one of their huge homecoming shows at the Don Valley Bowl in Sheffield during the summer.
The indie band are playing there on June 10th and 11th, with Calvi booked as part of the bill for the second date.
