Apple aiming to censor iPhone videos during gigs

Apple is looking at developing the technology to suspend video-camera functions at music gigs.

The music software giant Apple is testing the boundaries of draconian censorship by taking out a patent on software that would stop people from using their iPhones to make video recordings at music gigs.

According to the patent, which was filed 18-months ago, infra-red sensors would be able to detect iPhones as soon as they were lifted up to record a performance.

Once an iPhone was detected to be recording a live performance, the infra-red sensors would kick in and automatically disable the user's video functions.

They would still be able to use their phone normally, to send and receive texts and make calls, but the video functions would be temporarily out of order.

It is seen by Apple as an attempt to cut down on music piracy and the “illegal” publishing of content online on music video sharing websites like YouTube for other people to consume freely.

Opinion is already divided about the implications of this should it come into force.

Record bosses, event organisers and broadcasters, who have "exclusive rights" to concerts will see it as a way of protecting revenue, whereas music lovers who simply want to capture their experience will not be able to do so.

Apple's iPad will dominate the tablet market "indefinitely", according to Stacy Rasgon, a Sanford Bernstein analyst.
