Barack Obama praises Heavy D
Heavy D, whose funeral was held on November 18th, passed away at the age of 44 at the beginning of November from what is believed to be respiratory distress.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music," Obama said.
"Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers."
Rev Al Sharpton read the message during the funeral service, which was attended by hip hop luminaries past and present, stars who came to pay their respects.
This included Jay-Z, P Diddy, John Legend, Usher, Flavor Flav and Russell Simmons.
Dwight Arrington Myers (his real name) rose to fame with his outfit Heavy D & The Boyz.
They released five studio albums, produced by producer extraordinaire Teddy Riley of Blackstreet fame.
His last message on the social networking site was on November 8th. It reads: "Be inspired."
