Barbican Blaze Festival kicks off the weekend
The Barbican's Blaze Festival kicks off this weekend celebrating music from around the world.
Now in its third year, the annual festival includes commissions, new works, open-air concerts and special shows across a number of venues in East London.
Expect an array of music instruments to be magnificently played over the course of the opening weekend which explores Mediterranean music.
The following day sees Shangaan Electro, featuring vocalist Nozinja, clown-masked Tshetsha Boys, Tiyiselani, Nkata Mawewe and Shangaan dancers.
Shangaan Electro are known for their contemporary portrayals of traditional Shangaan tribal music. The outfit replace traditional music instruments with more modern ones, including midi keyboards and vocal samples.
Beyond the weekend, Hugh Masekela, the trumpet playing legend, along with his South African band, will be putting on a tribute show for Miriam Makeba, his late wife who passed away in 2008.
The magnetic Soul Rebel Brass Band will be playing at Shoreditch, bringing the heart and soul of New Orleans jazz to London.
The festival runs until July 28th 2011 and is part of the Create Festival presented by the Barbican.
