Beatles' guitar auctioned for $408,000
The custom-made VOX model was only expected to command a price of between $200,000 and $300,000 when it went under the hammer in New York but an unnamed US bidder took the memorabilia home with an even higher price.
Lennon played the guitar during a video for the song Hello, Goodbye while Harrison used it while practising the iconic hit I Am The Walrus which both featured on the 1967 album Magical Mystery Tour.
It was custom made for Lennon and was given to long time friend Yanni "Magic Alex" Mardas in 1967 with a plaque on the reverse side which reads "To Magic Alex, Alexi thank you for been a friend".
Prior to the auction in the US, the guitar has been on display in a museum in Ireland before making the trip across the Atlantic to be auctioned.
