The sleeve of The Beatles' final album has been hailed as the most imitated image in the history of popular music.

In 1969, the Fab Four put down their drum sticks and electric guitars to cross the zebra crossing outside the recording studio at Abbey Road.

The band were photographed for images that were later used on the sleeve of their next album, which they named after the location.

According to the Daily Mail, this album cover has spawned an "astonishing" array of imitations, making it perhaps the most copied record sleeve in pop history.

The newspaper highlighted a number of examples, including covers by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kanye West and even Paul McCartney.

"Forty years on and 12 million sales later, the most famous album cover of all time has been copied all over the world," it commented.

Abbey Road was the last album that The Beatles recorded together and contains many of their most enduring classics, including Something, Come Together and Here Comes The Sun.
