Bid to Allow Use of Steel-String Guitars in Prisons Won
An open letter for The Guardian, written in April and signed by musicians such as Billy Bragg, Johnny Marr, David Gilmour, Richard Hawley, Seasick Steve and more, urged the minister for justice to allow access to the instruments at the discretion of prison staff.
"We need to support purposeful activities like learning to play an instrument," said MP Kevin Brennan.
Billy Bragg heads up Jail Guitar Doors, a not-for-profit initiative that aims to provide instruments for prisoners which may help rehabilitation.
Bragg is happy with the result of the bid, saying, "I've had a number of projects involving guitars on hold which will now be able to go ahead, and will allow those using music in prisons to get on with this important work."
