Several high-quality electric and bass guitars belonging to rock band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club have been stolen.

Among the missing items are two Fender guitars – a 1954 Fender Esquire and a 1964 Fender Precision Bass.

Thieves also took a 1968 Ampeg Scrolltop Fretless Bass and a 1968 Gretsch Country Gentleman Single Cutaway.

The guitars, which belonged to Michael Been, the father of the band's bass guitar player Robert Levon Been, were stolen from the band's personal storage locker.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club made an emotional appeal on their website for the items to be returned.

"These items were extremely personal and the band, Michael, crew and management are devastated over this brazen act," they said in a statement.

The band have recently announced a UK tour to promote their upcoming new album, Beat the Devil's Tattoo, and will be appearing at venues in cities including Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester and London during April.
