Blackberry aiming to make a noise in mobile music

The smartphone is looking to challenge competitors with an innovative approach to the way music is accessed.

Blackberry is upping up its game in a bid to improve its online and mobile music software to compete with the likes of Apple, which has had a solid grip on the industry.

Research in Motion (RIM), the company behind the Blackberry smartphone, has launched BBM Music service, which is said to be more than just an alternative to other services on other smartphones.

The innovative nature of this music service is, as the Guardian describes, the way it is "built on top of its crown jewel: the BB messaging app".

A subscription service, users will be able to access 50 songs from four major record labels, which they can attach to their profiles.

However, in addition to that, users will be able to access the same number of songs from their messenger contacts who also use the service.

This means that, depending on how many contacts people have signed up to the service, they can have a modest choice of tracks on their smartphone, or a sizeable one.

Currently in closed beta mode, it is believed that major improvements will be made when it goes out proper.
