Blink-182 have started writing their next studio album, according to bass player Mark Hoppus.

Hoppus confirmed that the San Diego trio were currently working on the follow-up to 2011's Neighborhoods, but said that fans would have to wait at least a year before they got their hands on the new record.

The bassist told NME: "Early next week I go back to Los Angeles to record an iTunes session for Blink-182, and we're starting to write the new record right now. We're going to tour Australia in February with Blink [so the] proper tour and the new album probably won't happen for about a year."

It will be Blink's seventh record since their first album, Cheshire Cat, was released in 1994, and their second since returning from hiatus in 2009.

The band also announced that they had split with major record label Interscope and would now be performing as an unsigned group.

Guitarist Tom DeLonge broke the news on his Twitter account tweeting: "Freedom!! Blink as of today, is now an independent Artist!!!!!"

The trio completed a UK tour in the summer, including two intimate shows in Manchester's Apollo and London's Brixton Academy.
