Bobby Gillespie hits out at bland rock music
Bobby Gillespie told the Irish Times that today's crop of stars were more interested in being famous than in producing songs that would be timeless classics.
He discussed this with music pal Paul Weller over a nice cup of coffee. Both stars agreed that some rock stars seemed to lack the kind of ambition that Primal Scream and Weller had when they first started out.
"There doesn't seem to be a lot of artists out there anymore," he told the newspaper.
"It seems to me that if you were a serious young person and you had something to say that you'd be looking at other disciplines. In music, everything seems lightweight and conformist and not very artistic. Everybody seems to be settling for the status quo."
Gillespie went on to say that post-White Stripes and The Strokes, rock bands had lost their experimental edge – all creativity has gone out of the window.
Primal Scream formed back in 1982. It wasn't until 1991 that they finally crossed over to the mainstream with their seminal album Screamadelica.
