Broken guitar incident leads to smash hit
Dave Carroll's instrument was accidentally broken by staff at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago during a trip last year.
Mr Carroll was so incensed by the rough handling of his acoustic guitar that he tried to get compensation from the airline, but with no success.
The popularity of the track and the publicity it has generated may account for the airline's recent decision to relent and compensate Mr Carroll.
However, the acoustic guitar player has asked United Airlines to donate the money to a music charity instead.
Mr Carroll's song has so far attracted nearly three million views on YouTube and received more than 22,000 ratings.
