Bulgarian pianist Alexi Weissenberg has died
He was known for his powerful presence in front of the piano, which the New York Times described as a thunderous "aggressiveness" that had a "rational detachment".
Weissenberg showed a talent from an extremely young age, learning his trade from the age of three.
Originally taught by his mother, the future star's life was nearly cut short when, along with his family, he was sent to a concentration camp during the rise of European fascism in the 30s.
It was his deft skill on an accordion that saved his family, which appealed to one of the guards at the camp. He eventually put them on a train to Istanbul.
He then went on to study at the Jerusalem Academy of Music.
"As a young artist I learned new works very fast and played them much too soon," the newspaper quoted him as once saying.
"In ten years I would have reached a point where my whole repertory would have been overplayed and understudied. I did not want to end up at the age of 50 still a ‘promising' pianist."
