Campaign for Iron Maiden to open Olympics gathering support
An online campaign to get electric guitar legends Iron Maiden to open the Olympic Games in 2012 is gathering pace.
More than 90,000 people have now joined a Facebook group calling on organisers of the London event to book the band for the opening ceremony.
The campaign is aiming to get one million members to sign up to the virtual petition.
"Iron Maiden are one of the most successful bands to come out of England that are still active and are arguably the biggest metal band of all time," the group said.
It added that the electric guitar band "deserve" the chance to represent the UK at the event.
Later this year, Iron Maiden will be touring the US and Canada, before heading back to the UK for a festival date at the Sonsiphere Festival in Knebworth.
Last year, a similar Facebook campaign resulted in Rage Against the Machine track Killing in the Name making it to Christmas number one ahead of X-Factor winner Joe McElderry.Posted on 16 Apr 2010 09:45 to category : Band / Celebrity News
