Cassette single sales soar in 2012 – to 604 units
The format, which is on the edge of being defunct, saw single sales triple over the last 12 months, helped mainly by Welsh band Feeder releasing their January single, Borders, on cassette.
According to statistics from the Official Charts Company, the trio managed to shift 480 copies of the single, which peaked at number 52 in the charts, pushing the total volume of cassettes from 218, recorded in 2011, to 604 and representing the first time the band had released a single on tape since 2001's Just A Day.
Officials at the organisation explained that Feeder accounted for almost 80 per cent of the UK cassette single market in 2012.
Since the dawning of the digital age of music, where fans can simply download a track from the internet and sync to their iPod or MP3 player, it has made the cassette an almost dead format, although 3823 cassette albums were sold in the UK in 2012.
While they were once regarded as the up and coming way to listen to music on the go now many cars are not even fitted with cassette players.
