Cerys Matthews learned to play on a Spanish guitar
Musician and radio DJ Cerys Matthews has revealed that she originally learned to play a Spanish guitar with nylon strings which she found in her home as a child.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, the former Catatonia frontwoman said that she used the guitar to learn traditional Irish ballads and later on Beatles tracks.
"I think the roots of music are so important, and if you learn the Irish songbook, you see the connection with things like Appalachian music, or Bob Dylan," she added.
During the interview, the songstress also revealed how she almost destroyed her beloved Gibson guitar by running over it in her car when she was unable to get the brakes to work. However, luckily, while the case was completely smashed the guitar survived to be played another day.
While Cerys was with Catatonia the group released four albums, two of which, International Velvet and Equally Cursed and Blessed, topped the UK charts.
Since the group parted ways in September 2001, shortly after the release of Paper, Scissors, Stone, Cerys has released a number of solo offerings, including Cockahoop and Never Said Goodbye.
Her latest offering Explorer was released online in May this year.
