Charity to help raise money for school to continue delivering music therapy

Armagh Lions Club is to help Lisanally Special School raise money to continue delivering music therapy after funding was withdrawn.
Great deals on musical instruments

A charity has said that it will do everything it can to help raise money to allow a special needs school in Armagh City to continue delivering music therapy after funding was withdrawn.

Armagh Lions Club will seek to raise £4,000 before the start of the new term in September at Lisanally Special School, to ensure that the music therapy programme is in place for when the children come back from their summer holidays.

Music therapy is simply a way of using music in a therapeutic way, and includes, for example, the use of various music instruments to help them make sounds that ultimately leads to a positive outcome.

Fiona Davidson, executive director of the Northern Ireland Music Therapy Trust, told the BBC that music therapy was an invaluable support mechanism to children, especially those with profound multiple learning difficulties.

She said: "Many children with sensory disabilities such as sight, hearing and speech can be reached as music therapy does not rely on words.

"Music becomes the means of communication between the therapist and the child. Through this we can maximise their potential."

The Northern Ireland Music Therapy Trust was established in 1990 to provide music therapy to children and adults with "profound communication difficulties".
