Childhood music lessons 'improves hearing'
The research, which was conducted at Northwestern University in Illinois, found that even just playing the violin or piano for a few years could have a marked effect on people in adulthood.
It was noted that such individuals could process complex sounds better and were able to pick out particular sounds in noisy environments.
Professor Nina Kraus, who led the study, is quoted by the Telegraph as saying: "All these [previous] studies have been done on people who at the time of testing were still playing an instrument.
"This is really the first time that it has been demonstrated that in the more typical scenario - where someone has played a musical instrument for a number of years in childhood but then stopped - that prior training has a long-lasting effect on how their nervous system responds to sound."
The findings were reported in the Journal of Neuroscience.
The team are now carrying out a second study aimed at finding out whether different instruments shape the brain in different ways.
