Children urged to stick to one musical instrument
Nicola Benedetti, one of the world's leading violinists, has urged middle-class parents to stop forcing their offspring to learn multiple instruments as they will fail to reap the rewards of hard work and practise.
She explained that sometimes children from privileged backgrounds are faced with too many choices and lose that discipline of sticking to one instrument as they constantly switching between two or three.
“There is a balance to be struck, of course, but to me the most crucial thing is consistency if you ever want a child to have that feeling of satisfaction in their stomach when they have made something work because they stuck at it," Ms Benedetti said.
Having the dedication to stick to one instrument will mean that children are able to concentrate their efforts solely to a piano, guitar or violin, for example.
Ms Benedetti, who claimed the title of BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2004, picked up the violin when she was just four years old and explains that some children are shocked when she tells them that she has to practise nearly six hours a day to maintain her high standard.
