Chocolate Factory classic gets the stage treatment

Great deals on musical instruments
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is one of the classics of childhood bedtime reading.

It's already been made into two film versions, a 70s adaptation (re-named Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and with Gene Wilder in the title role), and a Tim Burton version featuring Johnny Depp from 2005.

And now, following the success of the recent song-filled stage version of Dahl's kids' book Matilda, Charlie is going to hit the stage in a fresh show, too, in a production that will almost certainly employ a range of music instruments.

Taking its inspiration from the book, the musical is set to be helmed by Sam Mendes and will hit stages in 2013.

Dahl's works are no strangers to adaptation. Among the film versions of his books for kids are an animated take on The BFG, a version of The Witches with Anjelica Huston on board as the Grand High Witch and a partly animated and partly live-action take on James and the Giant Peach.
