Chorus-less Massive Attack
Massive Attack never write choruses into their songs.
The group's Robert '3D' Del Naja said because they aren't conventional musicians they never set about song writing in a normal way, leading to their eclectic and cinematic style.
Robert said: "We never wrote proper songs with choruses. Our most successful song, 'Unfinished Sympathy' was written after we took the chorus out of it and put the orchestral parts in.
"I think what works is that the people's voices and personalities are more important than the choruses with the person putting something even more intriguing into it."
The Bristol-based group is also famed for working with an eclectic number of musicians, and said often the creative input of someone outside of the group can breathe new life into an old track, or one they feel stuck with.
Robert, 45, added to website The Quietus: "Sometimes we have lost faith in a track and someone comes in and says I like that and it works again. We have discarded a lot of stuff over the years. Ultimately it's the chemistry of people.
"Damon Albarn works in an impulsive, spontaneous way. When the moment's passed, the moment's passed. With him it's not trawling through ideas to make them work. When we got to his studio we put ourselves in his headspace, which was good for us because it was a different way of working. It was not our normal Bristolian vortex."
The groups latest album, 'Heligoland' features Damon, Elbow singer Guy Garvey, Martina Topley-Bird and long-standing contributor Horace Andy.
'Heligoland' was released this week.Posted on 12 Feb 2010 07:30 to category : Music News
