Classical guitarist bringing back the Baroque

A classical guitar player is aiming to bring the music of the Baroque period to a new generation of listeners.

David Russell, renowned for his musical skills, is using his classical guitar to present the work of renowned composers like Bach, Handel, Lully and Scarlatti in way that makes them more accessible.

The Baroque period of music ran from 1600-1750, and was notable for its ornate quality of style, which might have made it difficult to play on the guitar.

Speaking to the BBC, Russell explained that he is able to do this because the music that composers like Bach wrote during this time was "very pure in conception".

Russell, who won a Grammy in 2005 for Aire Latino, works by memorising the complex pieces "back to front", starting at the end of the composition and working his way to the beginning of the piece, and then plays the pieces through in his mind.

Along with Russell, new kid on the block Milos Karadaglic, 27, who recently topped the classical charts with his debut album The Guitar, is seen as another key figure in reinvigorating interest in the classical guitar.
