Classical music 'threatened'

Classical musicians are worried new regulations will affect the purity of their sound.
Is this an end to pure classical music?
New EU regulations restricting the use of certain types of animal tissue being used in the production of certain instruments could radically "worsen" the way classical music is experienced.

A lot of classical musical instruments like the violin and cello use beef guts to make their strings, which has been an age-long material.

However, the powers that be believe that this approach to making musical instruments falls under the same strict laws that govern "mad cow" disease, otherwise known as CJD.

It has caused uproar in the classical world as musicians claim that to play music from the seminal period of 1650-1750, these instruments need to be made as they always have been.

Viktoria Mullova, a London-based, Russian-born violinist, told the Telegraph of her dismay at the news.

"We wouldn't be able to play music any more. I wouldn't be able to play Bach, and we can't live without Bach," she said.

"You can't avoid using gut strings for the Baroque repertoire. It would be like telling pop stars they couldn't use microphones at a concert. Putting metal strings on old instruments would produce a horrible, distorted sound."
