Classical pianist to hold recitals in the rainforest
Keys of Change founder Panos Karan will play the piano for indigenous communities in Peru and Ecuador, sharing classical pieces with people from remote villages.
"A Bach Prelude and Fugue or a Rachmaninov Piano Concerto belong to the Amazon Rainforest as much as to the glamorous stage of Carnegie Hall”, said Karan.
“Through Keys of Change, I am reaching places and people who wouldn't get a chance to witness a concert of this kind or to experience playing notes on a keyboard."
He added that he will have to take his keyboard to some of the concert venues by canoe.
So far, Karan has conducted concerts in locations as diverse as a classroom, a village's communal house, the banks of the Amazon River and an open field.
“Music can give hope and encouragement in times of the greatest grief, sorrow and despair,” he added.
“This trip has changed me as an artist and a person.”
Keys of Change is a charity aimed at promoting musical education across the globe.
As well as the Bach in the Amazon project, volunteers are performing piano recitals in Japan and establishing a music and language school in Coca.
