Coldplay win songwriting award
Coldplay and Taio Cruz were honoured with songwriting awards last night (13.10.10)
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) named the group's 2008 single 'Viva La Vida' as its Song of the Year. The band were also named Songwriters of the Year by the society - which collects royalties on behalf of artists in the US.
The band accepted their awards with a video message from their studio in London, where they are presently working on their fifth album.
Frontman Chris Martin said: "We're in the studio, trying not to be too s""t."
Taio Cruz picked up the Vanguard Award for his debut album 'Departure' and Scouting for Girls won the U.S. College Award for their album 'Everybody Wants to Be on TV'.
Speaking at the awards, Scouting for Girls frontman Roy Stride said the night was: "An inspirational evening."
Other winners included Imogen Heap, who also performed at the event, and songwriters also picked up awards, including Al "Shux" Shuckburgh, who co-wrote Jay-Z's 'Empire State of Mind', Human League member Jo Callis for the band's track 'Don't You Want Me' and Pete Burns and Stephen Coy of Dead or Alive for song 'Right Round'.
