Composer's musical instruments showcased
Musical instruments invented by an internationally renowned Iranian musician are to be showcased at an exhibition in Tehran.
Visitors to the Bahar Hall of Iranian Artists will be able to see the 14 brand new instruments that have been developed by Mohammadreza Shajarian throughout his illustrious career.
Seen by many as one of the great masters of Persian music, Shajarian's creations are the result of his ambition to produce new sounds and styles.
“No one, except for a few people, has made any efforts to overcome this tonal deficiency by inventing new instruments, which could expand the melodic richness of Iranian traditional music," he is quoted by the Tehran Times as saying.
Two of the 14 instruments are recent designs, and the exhibition will mark their first unveiling. The arghanum and barbad will join the unique family of stringed instruments, which includes the shahrashub, sorahi, saghar, sabu, kereshmeh and bamsaz.
Shajarian has been recognised by the international world for his contribution to music. In 1999 he was awarded the UNESCO Golden Picasso Award and in 2006 received the UNESCO Mozart Medal.
