Craftsman restores music instruments belonging to Jews during the Holocaust
An Israeli craftsman has revealed how he has come to spend his own time and money restoring violins that once belonged to Jews during the Holocaust.
Amnon Weinstein told Ynetnews how ten years ago, spurred on by an idea that came from one of his students, he decided to collect and restore music instruments – specifically violins – that were not completely destroyed by the Nazis during the systematic murder of the Jewish race.
"He's the one who told me that there are probably quite a few deserted violins which used to belong to murdered Jewish musicians, both in Germany and in other countries," he told the online news provider.
"I decided to look for them and renovate them after performing at an event dedicated to this issue in the city of Dresden.
A second-generation violin builder, Mr Weinstein has restored 28 of the music instruments that have originated from Jewish musicians.
They now form an ever-growing collection of poignant music instruments.
Mr Weinstein describes his collection as the Violins of Hope, which has, subsequently, been displayed in exhibitions across Europe.
Approximately six million Jews were murdered at the hands of the Nazis.
