Customs seize Japanese musician's violin

Yuzuko Horigome had her violin seized at customs.
Great deals on musical instruments
German customs have seized a valuable violin from a Japanese musician and are demanding that she pay almost $500,000 to get it back.

A report from the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper states that Yuzuko Horigome was transiting through Frankfurt Airport last week following a concert in Japan when she was told that she needed to pay duty on her 1741 Guarnerius violin.

She was asked to pay 190,000 euros, plus fines, taking the total to 380,000 euros. The music instrument was confiscated when she could not produce the documents proving she had purchased the violin in 1986.

"The instrument is a tool for my work. For musicians, instruments are like parts of your bodies," she told the newspaper.

"I have used Frankfurt Airport many times and never had problems like this before. I don't know why this happened."

A spokesman for the German authorities told the news provider that the instrument might be returned if it is regarded as necessary for Horigome's job.
