Damon Albarn trades usual music instruments for the world of opera
Damon Albarn is swapping his traditional music instruments for something altogether different – the classical world of opera.
The Blur and Gorillaz star has written the music for Dr Dee: An English Opera, which he will also perform, reported the BBC.
Opening in July as part of the Manchester International Festival, it will be directed by Rufus Norris, the renowned theatre director and collaborator on the project.
The opera is based on the life of Dr John Dee, a polymath who lived during the reign of Elizabeth I.
Speaking to Radio 4's John Wilson, Albarn said that he had a "really strange emotional connection" to a magical and haunted England.
He said: "It's something that really stirs me in an irrational way."
Norris added that Dee was one of the "last great free thinkers" to have ever existed because science and magic were still very much entwined.
The Gorillaz, Albarn's animated music outfit, recently composed most of their new album The Fall on an iPad.
