Dave Smith Pro 2 Synth Released - UPDATED
After a tease last week of Smith sat at a keyboard for a video shoot, the company has finally given us more information.
We were initially unsure whether the 'big announcement' would be a new synth module, a firmwire update, a keyboard synthesizer or something else entirely.
Dave Smith Instruments wrote on their Facebook page "We're just putting the finishing touches on the new synth! Here's a small photo in the meantime."
The photo doesn't give too much away so we'll just have to speculate until more information is released.
UPDATEDave Smith Instruments has announced a new synth - the Pro 2 - which Dave Smith describes as his most powerful mono synth ever.
The DSI Pro 2 Synth features four digital oscillators (plus sub-oscillator) with super saw waves and new dual analog filters. The filters (one low-pass and one state-variable) can be run in series or parallel with the state variable filter providing low-pass, high-pass and band-pass modes.
Oscillators can be routed in pairs to either filter for a variety of tonal options. Dave Smith created the new filter to give the Pro 2 a depth and presence that's immediately recognisable. It's distinctly different from other Dave Smith synths such as the Prophet 12.
The full-featured step sequencer operates in 32 x 8, or 16 x 16 mode and allows real-time input. It can sync to external MIDI clock and can also be driven by an external audio input. Sequences can control not only oscillator pitch, but any parameter in the Pro 2's extensive modulation matrix. It supports both rests and variable-length sequences.
The Pro 2 is also designed to be open-ended and flexible. The four control voltage ins and puts open up[ a ton of possibilities for connection with other gear.
Smith also notes that although the Pro 2 was designed as a powerful mono synth it's actually 4 voice paraphonic so you can play 4 notes simultaneously if you want to.
Other features include a multimode arpeggiator; 4 stereo, multi-tap delays with analog modeling; 4 LFOs; tuned feedback; analog distortion; Character controls with sound sculpting options such as Drive, Hack, Decimation, Girth, and Air; and extensive modulation possibilities.
The Dave Smith Pro 2 is scheduled to start shipping at the end of July 2014.
