Depeche Modes Music Director praises Ableton Live
In a recent video filmed at a concert in Berlin's Olympiastadion, Kerry Hopwood (Depeche Mode's Musical Director) explained how live drum processing through Ableton Live gave the band the energy, reliability and power that they needed within a live environment.
Speaking in Berlin, Kerry recalled how in previous tours, Depeche Mode have relied on playing recorded drums on tape; but that over time they've come to prefer the extra dynamic of a live drummer.
For a band who delve into electronic drum sounds (on record), and who have recorded real drums in the studio that are then altered with other equipment a replication of these sounds on stage through a live acoustic drum kit may seem like a tall order.
Kelly comments however, that through using Ableton Live at the core of their setup, this challenge has become remarkably easy to overcome.
On top of EQ-ing and gating the 16 drum-mic inputs from Depeche Mode's live kit, Kerry and the whole of Depeche Mode have been delighted with the sounds produced through then simply adding plugins that come as standard within Ableton Live to each drum track.
As Kerry described, by effecting live drums in this way, the result is a more electronic drum sound (integral to the band's music) that doesnt lose the power and added dynamic of a live drummer.
Kerry was also keen to mention that having used mixing desks and outboards in the past, the change to Ableton Live has helped maintain consistency, and complimented the reliability of the software on the road.
