A new plan will see the city of Derry give a musical instrument to every child in order to help it develop a reputation as a musical destination. This will play an important part in its first year as a UK City of Culture.

The scheme will also see young people receiving tuition in instruments such as the acoustic guitar and will be the first initiative of its type in the world. It has been predicted that 9,000 children under the age of 13 will benefit from the initiative.

Garbhan Downey, director of marketing and communications for the Children's Music Promise, has highlighted the fact that the scheme has already attracted international attention. "It is being looked at by everybody. It could change the way music is taught in the curriculum," he explained.

Bamboo Shoots, Westfield New Jersey's first Chinese-language pre-school recently announced that it would begin to provide violin lessons to three-to-six year olds as part of a new music programme, NJ Today has reported. It is hoped that these lessons will inspired pupils to develop passion and expertise, as well as children's social skills, self-esteem and academic performance.
