Dinosaur Jr drummer tells young musicians: Be yourself
Emmett 'Murph' Murphy, the man behind the drum kit in influential band Dinosaur Jr, has advised young musicians that they shouldn't worry too much about what genre of music they are making.
He told the Queen's University Journal that those getting behind the drum kit for the first time should concentrate on making songs that interest them rather than what might appeal to other people.
"Be true to yourself and the music," he said. "Be real.
"Don't worry about the type of music you should be making."
Murphy has played the drum kit in Dinosaur Jr since 1984 and the band has been credited with inspiring other acts such as Sonic Youth and Broken Social Scene.
He said that he has seen a lot of changes take place in the music industry and advised young musicians that it was important to develop a DIY ethos because of the financial uncertainty facing many record companies.
Last year, MTV News named Dinosaur Jr's latest album, Farm, among its top 20 releases of 2009.
