Disney grief for songsmith Sherman

Brother calls him 'loyal friend'

The chief executive of Disney has said that it is mourning the death of Robert B Sherman, a songsmith whose music became associated with the studio's films.

The composer, born in 1925, was nominated for nine Oscars while working with Richard Sherman, his brother. No other co-composers wrote music for as many film songs as they did, according to a studio communication.

Robert's talent and 'limitless imagination' were praised by Richard, who also added thanks to Walt Disney and the pair's father, calling them "our key inspirations". The brothers' dad was also a writer of songs.

"He was my loyal friend all through the years," Richard said of his brother.

Robert, who was 86 when he died on Monday, co-wrote Dick Van Dyke number Chim Chim Cher-ee for the film Mary Poppins. Later he worked with the actor again on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

"From Mary Poppins and It's a Small World to Winnie the Pooh and The Jungle Book, Robert, along with his brother Richard, wrote many of Disney's most memorable and beloved songs,” said Disney CEO Robert A. Iger.

"One of the world's greatest songwriters and a true Disney legend, his legacy will endure forever through the magic of his music," he concluded.
