Great deals on musical instruments

Andre Rieu, the renowned Dutch musician known for his command of the violin, won Album of the Year at last night's Classic Brit Awards.

Rieu, 66, who is seen as single-handedly transforming the once unfashionable waltz into a top stadium draw, received the top award for his Moonlight Serenade.

The album, which was recorded with his Johann Strauss Orchestra, went down a storm last year and topped the classical charts for most of 2010.

He was one of three violin players to win awards at the glittering ceremony. Other winners included British musician Tasmin Little, who received the Critic's Award for her album of Elgar's Violin Concerto.

The other violinist to win an award was Norway's 24 year-old Vilde Frang, who won Best Newcomer.

It was a another great night for British classical musicians with trumpet musician Alison Balsom winning best Female Artist of the Year and conductor Antonio Pappano, who is also music director of the Royal Opera House, taking Male Artist of the Year.

Last year Rieu's album Forever Vienna reached number two in the British pop charts, the highest chart position a classical album has achieved this century. In total, the musician has sold over 22 million albums worldwide.
