Elbow to rock the London Olympics

Mercury Prize-winning Elbow have been chosen by the BBC to record its soundtrack for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The hit indie-rock band, who achieved global fame with their breakthrough studio album The Seldom Seen Kid, have already produced a six-minute track called First Steps.

However, Guy Garvey, the band's frontman, will not be on lead vocals – a choir will take over those duties.

"It's a real challenge because it's designed to fit important images nationally and people's endeavours, people have trained their whole lives for that moment," Garvey told the BBC.

"For our music to be sound-tracking it, there was a big feeling of responsibility but also we're just dead proud to be doing it. And strange as well with none of us really being athletic."

He added that it was a song that could be compared to the feeling parents get when they see their children walk for the first time.

Elbow's new album, Build a Rocket Boys! was described by NME's John Doran as being in "a different league to other purveyors of emotional atmospheric rock".
