Elvis film to star unknown actor
John Scheinfeld, who is well-respected for his documentaries about Beatles legend John Lennon and Harry Nilsson, told Rolling Stone the decision to put an unknown actor in the lead role for the film entitled Fame & Fortune was the only sensible choice going.
"My feeling is that we need to cast an unknown. If you cast a known actor, then it's 'there's so-and-so playing Elvis.' I want to find an actor who can really inhabit Elvis," he said.
"So, I have in mind that we'd have to do a worldwide sort-of Scarlett O'Hara search to find the best guy for this."
He added that this didn't mean that big names were not entirely out of the question for other parts as being an indie film, the pulling power of famous actors would be a big draw.
The film isn't a straight biopic of Elvis that would see the story follow the conventional narrative of a small-town Mississippi acoustic guitar playing boy rising to the heady heights of fame and fortune and ultimately tragedy.
Instead, it looks to tell his life through his friendship with Sonny West, the star's long time bodyguard and confidant.
