Environmentalists Condemn Bechstein Louis XV Piano Replica for Ivory Keys
The remake of the Bechstein Louis XV has been to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the German company and has taken three years to make, the Guardian reports.
It was originally created for Queen Victoria and by sticking to the 19th century specifications laid out by Carl Bechstein it has included real ivory key tops for one of the two keyboards.
This decision has sparked outrage within the Born Free Foundation and a number of leading charities which claims that the problem around ivory hunting is still as bad as it has been for the past 30 years.
The organisation estimated that around 32,000 elephants died due to ivory hunting in the past year alone.
Phillips Mansbridge, chief executive officer for Care For The Wild International, agreed with the sentiment and told the news provider: "It is in bad taste [making of the ivory piano]. I know they are trying to create something from the 19th century and they want it to be original but the crisis with poaching at the moment is truly out of control."
The use of ivory on pianos was banned in 1989 and now most keys are made from plastic.
