Europe frontman Joey Tempest has hailed the distinctive keyboard sound on the band's classic hit The Final Countdown.

Speaking to BBC News, he revealed that he first wrote the riff when he was at college and hung on to it for several years before completing the song.

Tempest said that by the mid-80s, many rock bands such as Van Halen were experimenting with keyboards.

However, he noted that he wanted The Final Countdown to be a combination of keyboards and electric guitars.

Tempest commented: "We had 11 or 12 synthesisers midied together to create that sound.

"We got it really good in the end."

He went on to describe the track as a "magic song", adding that he particularly enjoys performing it on stage.

"We play it live a lot," he stated.

Europe released their new album Last Look At Eden earlier this week and are currently preparing to tour countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK.
