Ex members of Nirvana jam on Smells Like Teen Spirit
Nirvana fans got the surprise of their lives after learning that Dave Grohl got together with his old bandmates and banged out Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time in 17 years.
The Foo Fighters frontman used to play drums for Nirvana, which came to an end following the death of singer-songwriter Kurt Cobain.
In an interview with the Observer, Grohl said that during a typical run-through for a Foo Fighters gig, he, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear (live second guitarist) found themselves in a situation they could never have imagined.
He told the newspaper: "Krist is on bass, Pat's on guitar. I'm on drums. Krist says, 'You wanna run through some oldies?' Me and Pat look at each other. I mean, that's something I've never considered before. I was like 'OK'."
He added: "It was like... a ghost. It was heavy."
Poignantly, notable for the obvious absence of Cobain, the band played an instrumental version of it with no-one singing.
News of this comes on the back of the recent announcement that a 'super deluxe' edition of Nirvana's classic studio album Nevermind is to be released in September 2011, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its release.
