FOI results in music instruments related revelation

EIS reports on music instrument lesson related profits.
Great deals on musical instruments
Wherever in the UK they live, many music instruments players will likely have begun their relationship with an instrument through taking lessons in it. They could have taken recorder, piano or electric guitar lessons, for example.

But a Freedom of Information request has apparently revealed that local authorities in Scotland are seeing large net profits off the back of music instruments lessons for school-goers.

That's according to EIS, the teaching union that made the request and says that authorities' profits from youngsters' instrument tuition fees equate to close to £3 million.

This suggests a lot of councils are asking those taking lessons for greater fees than they would need to in order to get back the amount that tuition costs, the organisation says.

"It is truly shocking, at a time of deep cuts to music tuition in schools across Scotland, that local authorities are collectively raking in profits of almost £3 million from charges for music tuition," said Larry Flanagan, general secretary of the EIS.

He said that two authorities had created close to one million of profit between them by charging for music lessons.

"These councils, and the others who are profiting from pupils' eagerness to learn, need to explain their actions and outline precisely how this excess revenue is being spent to support music education in our schools," he added.

He also said that certain authorities do not charge for music lessons or ask only for what they need to get costs back.
