Festival bosses admit they've reached a peak

Festival organisers have admitted for the first time that music events could have hit a peak after it was revealed that 31 festivals have so far either been cancelled or postponed because of poor ticket sales.

The music festival market has become so overcrowded that it is impossible for them all to draw in huge numbers.

Many view this as a product of the festival life cycle reaching its natural high.

Others have cited economic factors as affecting the ability of people to not only be able to afford ticket prices, but to be able to handle the additional costs that come with attending such events.

This includes travel costs, food and drink and in some cases, paying for accommodation. It has simply become financially unviable.

It's believed that many of the smaller festivals will end up as the first, and quite possibly only, casualties.

Speaking to the BBC, Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, which organises festivals for Reading, Leeds, The Big Chill and Latitude, said that it had been a challenging year.

He explained that ticket sales had been slower than usual and that festivals would be culled.

Mr Benn added: "What we may be looking at is a bit of a reshaping of what a festival is - becoming less dependent on headliners and more dependent on an overall vibe."

Earlier this year, Michael Eavis, the founder of Glastonbury, predicted that even his own extremely popular festival had about three to four years left.
