Film composer John Barry to receive Classic Brit

The late film composer John Barry is to be honoured at the Classic Brits.

Film composer John Barry is set to be honoured with an Outstanding Contribution to Music accolade at the Classic Brits.

The event will also feature a celebration of some of his greatest scores, including the themes for Dances with Wolves, Out of Africa and 11 Bond flicks such as Dr No and Diamonds are Forever.

As well as composing, Barry was also an accomplished piano and trumpet player.

Commenting on the honour, Barry's widow Laurie said: "He was an advocate of classical musicians and the growth of classical music in the UK.

"On behalf of his family, we are very grateful that he has been recognised for his achievements."

There is also a planned memorial concert for the composer at the Royal Albert Hall in June, which will celebrate his life and raise funds for the John Barry Scholarship for Film Composition at the Royal College of Music in London, which aims to help music instrument players achieve their dreams.

John Barry died in January this year following a heart attack at the age of 77.

The Classic Brits will take place on May 12th and will see a host of awards being given out, including gongs for Album Of The Year.

IL Divo will be presented with the Artist of the Decade accolade.
